"The 2007 Mid-Year meeting es a collaboration between [the International Neuropsychological Society] INS, the Federation
of Spanish Neuropsychological Associations and the Spanish Psychiatry Society. The theme for this meeting is "Advances in
Basic and Clinical Neuropsychology". It promises to be a scientifically stimulating meeting, with over 500 abstracts being
presented. The meeting will be held on July 4-7, 2007 at the Palacion de Congresos y de la Música Euskalduna".

¤ INTRODUCTION:
Increase of life expectancy in our culture has implied an increase in prevalence of pathologies associated
to the aging process. Thus, proposal of multidisciplinary intervention are increasingly necesary for an integral
approach of these pathologies.
¤ GOALS:
Maintain and/or improve the cognitive performance of a group of residentialized elderly people, in the
areas of language and visual motor coordination
¤ METHOD:
It was developed a clinical design with pre and
post treatment measures, and an analysis or changes, in a
sample of 10 elderly people (3 men and 7 women) age 65 or
older residentialized at the private residence for elderly
"La Loma", in Samano, Castro Urdiales (Cantabria, Spain).
We studied two variables: language and visual motor coordination.
Language an Visual Motor Coordination were respectively assessed
with the language subscale and the ideational motor praxis
subscale from CAMCOG test.
After group conformation and pre-treatment assessment, group
directed cognitive stimulation program known as "Gimnasia
de la Memoria" (Memory Gym) was implemented. Implementation
of this program was 9 months long, in 3 weekly sessions of
2 hours each (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10.30
a.m. to 12.30p.m.), with a total amount of 100 sessions. After
finishing the intervention, post-treatment assessment was
developed.
¤ RESULTS:
Statistical analyses, by means of the Wilcoxon
test, show that we obtain an improvement for language and
visual motor coordination variables, with the following results:
For language function, our sample, assessed with the language
subscale from CAMCOG test, experimented an increase of their
performance from a mean score of 17,50 (with a standard deviation
of 6,819) to 19,90 (s.d.=7,047), z=-2,579, p=.01 (p<.05).
For visual motor coordination, our sample, assessed with ideational
motor praxis subscale from CAMCOG test, improved their performance
from a mean score of 4,70 (s.d.=1,567) to 5,50 (s.d.=1,581),
z=-2,333, p=.02 (p>.05).
¤ CONCLUSIONS:
It was observed a significant improvement in elderly
people for a wide range of abilities as both spoken and written
naming, verbal comprehension and expression, identification
of non-verbal clues, a better response to different sensorial
clues (mainly, visual and auditory clues), a better integration
of visual and motor clues, and an improvement of interpersonal
motor coordination.
Thus, we consider "Gimnasia de la Memoria" a cognitive stimulation
program that helps elderly people when it comes to increase
their cognitive life expectancies.
